29th Infantry Division Artillery

A brigade-level headquarters for the 29th Infantry Division, back in Virginia since 2025 — and the association standing up beside it.

The DIVARTY

The 29th Infantry Division Artillery is a Virginia Army National Guard formation based in Bowling Green, Virginia, with a strength of about 250 Soldiers. It is a brigade-level headquarters. Col. Shawn Talmadge commands it.

Plan, prepare, execute, and assess combined-arms operations to provide close support and precision strike for the 29th Infantry Division.

Virginia National Guard Public Affairs records the alignment as the Norfolk-based 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery Regiment, plus line battalions in Florida and Georgia for training.

Colors for the DIVARTY and its Headquarters and Headquarters Battery were uncased on 6 September 2025 at the Virginia War Memorial, Richmond. Maj. Gen. James W. Ring, the Adjutant General of Virginia, presided. Brig. Gen. Christopher J. Samulski, commanding general of the 29th Infantry Division, and Col. Shawn Talmadge spoke.

The Army cased those colors in 2005 after force-structure changes. The last live-fire of that era was at Fort Barfoot (then Fort Pickett); a small ceremony at 29th Infantry Division Headquarters, Fort Belvoir marked the deactivation. The Army is putting DIVARTYs back into the National Guard for large-scale combat operations.

The new DIVARTY continues the World War II lineage that provided artillery for the 29th Infantry Division from the beaches of Normandy to Victory in Europe Day.

This site is the association, not the unit. Official unit news and recruiting live with the Virginia National Guard: va.ng.mil/Army-Guard/29th-DIVARTY. To enlist into the formation, start at nationalguard.com/va.

The association

The 29th Division Artillery Association, Inc. is standing up to keep that heritage, to back the Soldiers and families serving in the DIVARTY now, and to give everyone who has ever worn the patch a place to gather — online here, and in person in December.

Membership itself is national. Dues and enrollment live with the United States Field Artillery Association, and this association affiliates with it rather than charging a second set of dues. What lives here is the local part: events, announcements, founding supporters, and Saint Barbara.

Board names, bylaws, and the IRS determination will be posted on this site as soon as the association has them in hand.

Membership, dues, and recognition are national. They run through USFAA, not through this association.
